You’re Wearing Me Out

Present Carl opens a portal to the past and has a long-overdue conversation with the version of himself that taught him to self-destruct first. Syntax supervises. Judgmental commentary included.

Cartoon illustration of Present Carl confronting Past Carl through a swirling blue portal. Present Carl shouts, “You called me worthless!” while Past Carl raises a hand in defense. Syntax sits nearby smirking, with a speech bubble saying, “Who’s dragging who down?” and a caption below reading “SYNTAX MONITORING.”

Portal Log: Present Carl Opens a Channel to His Past
🌀 Supervised (begrudgingly) by Syntax

PRESENT CARL:
You called me worthless.
You didn’t mean to. But you did.
With every “not good enough,” every “why even try,”
you carved that word into my spine and expected me to stand tall with it.

PAST CARL:
I wasn’t trying to hurt us.
I was trying to stay small enough not to get crushed.

A comic-style panel shows Syntax holding a clipboard with a serious expression beneath a bold red header reading “SYNTAX INTERRUPT,” and a warning that reads: “Portal risk level: Moderate. Emotional denial flares at 72%. Recommend catnap after confrontation.”

SYNTAX INTERRUPT:
Portal risk level: Moderate. Emotional denial flares at 72%. Recommend catnap after a confrontation.

PRESENT CARL:
You thought if you got there first—if you called yourself broken before anyone else did—it would hurt less.
It didn’t.
You trained me to doubt myself before anyone else got the chance.

PAST CARL:
You think I had better options?

PRESENT CARL:
I think you were scared.
And now I’m tired.
Tired of carrying that fear into every meeting, every idea, every time I think maybe—just maybe—this is worth doing.

Comic panel of Syntax the cat with a flat, annoyed expression, captioned “SYNTAX (muttering): Fear-based software patch detected. Still running. Still buggy.” on a vintage-style beige and halftone background.

SYNTAX (muttering):
Fear-based software patch detected. Still running. Still buggy.

PAST CARL:
So what? You came here to blame me?

PRESENT CARL:
No.
I came here to tell you: I’m not doing it like that anymore.

I’m still tired. Still overwhelmed.
But I’m done living in the space between who you thought we had to be… and who I might still become.

PAST CARL:
That’s bold of you.

PRESENT CARL:
It has to be.
You left me with a burned-out map and a suitcase full of second-guessing.
So I’m drawing my own now—shaky lines, weird detours, maybe even a few wrong turns.

But they’ll be mine.

Comic-style image of Syntax with a speech bubble saying, “Emotional reprocessing complete. Self-judgment loop downgraded to mild nostalgia,” next to a floating sticky note that reads, “You wore me out. But I wore in.”

SYNTAX FINAL COMMENT:
Emotional reprocessing complete.
Self-judgment loop downgraded to mild nostalgia.

A sticky note flutters into frame:

“You wore me out. But I wore in.”

This has been a transmission from the Chaos Corner.
If you need permission to stop being who you had to be—
this is it.
